Born on iRacing. Raced for real.

Most GB22 schemes start as a sim paint. A handful have gone on to carry real sponsors around real tracks.

The first original on a real car

A from-scratch scheme for Blaine Perkins and the No. 29. It was the first original GB22 design to take the green flag, and it is still the one I'm most proud of.

GB22 designs the schemes Brayton Laster runs in ARCA. Different sponsors, different tracks, pavement and dirt, and each car gets a look of its own that still reads as the 06.

The Earnhardt Daytona tribute

A GB22 design for Bobby Earnhardt, honoring the Corvette his grandfather drove in the 2001 Rolex 24. It started as an iRacing paint, then Rise Racing put it on the No. 89 for real. Bobby said the result “absolutely nailed” it.

From the track to the game

I designed this black and green No. 06 for Brayton Laster's ARCA car, and it made it into NASCAR 25, so anyone can pick it and race it. I started out painting cars in NASCAR Thunder 2002, so seeing one of my own in an official NASCAR game meant a lot.

Fun fact: on the real car, the green glows in the dark.

// 5-point designs

One sheet that sells the car

A 5-point design shows the car from both sides, the front, the rear and the top on a single page, with the sponsors, colors and race details called out. It is the scheme in a form you can hand to anyone.

  • Pitch a sponsor

    Put a prospect's logo on the car and send them the sheet. They see exactly what they are buying before they commit.

  • Make the merch

    Clean, flat artwork of the car is ready to drop onto shirts, hero cards and posters.

  • Brief the wrap shop

    Every panel, number and decal position is on one page, so the car comes out the way it was drawn.

// 3D renders · Built in Blender

Studio shots, before the car exists

I render race cars on full 3D models, so a scheme can be seen from any angle before a wrap is ever printed. Good for scheme reveals, sponsor decks and social posts.

Not every car here is my livery. Some are other designers' schemes I was asked to render, and each one says who designed it.

// At the track

I'll be there on race weekend

The work doesn't have to stop when the files are delivered. I'm willing to travel to the track and help your team look after the people and the content that keep a program funded.

I've done it before. In a former job I traveled to tracks to help promote product and keep guests happy, so I know how a race weekend runs from the hospitality side.

// How it works

Four laps to a finished car

  1. Brief

    Send the car, series, number, sponsors and any ideas or reference schemes you like.

  2. Concept

    You get a first look at the scheme on a 3D model of the actual car, not a flat sketch.

  3. Revisions

    Colors, numbers and logo placement get tuned until it is right.

  4. Delivery

    Sim paints go live on Trading Paints. Real-world schemes arrive as a 5-point design your wrap shop can work from.

// About me

I'm Joe R. Wells

I run GB22 Designs from Florida. I grew up a big NASCAR fan, with Dale Earnhardt and Tony Stewart as my inspirations and idols, and I've been painting race cars since the create-a-car screen in NASCAR Thunder 2002.

I picked up Photoshop and Illustrator when I found iRacing, because I wanted a car nobody else had. Since then my schemes have run in the Xfinity Series and ARCA, landed in an officially licensed NASCAR game, and earned a Trading Paints Artist Spotlight.

“I always wanted to be unique.”

I'm an avid sim racer too. I co-own G-Lightning Motors, our sim team, and we compete in NASCAR and endurance events on iRacing.

I love every series, and I love traveling to tracks across the country. Weekends at IMSA, WEC, IndyCar and NASCAR races give me most of my ideas, along with a shelf of a few hundred 1/24 diecasts. I like schemes that are bold and loud, and nothing gets me going like a good throwback.

I'm always looking to get more of my work on track, and I'd love to find new teams to work with. If that's you, get in touch.
